Hi everyone,

I’m excited to tell you about a project I’ve been fundraising for – it’s an exhibit on Sacramento’s historic Japantown. “Sacramento Japantown: Destroyed By Design” opens at the Sacramento History Museum, 101 I Street in Old Sacramento, on Nov. 6 and runs through May 2027. 

Sacramento once had the 4th largest Japantown on the West Coast before it was lost to World War II incarceration and downtown redevelopment. As you may know, Ji-chan’s parents ran the Sendai Hotel on 3rd between L and M Streets. You’ll see the Sendai mentioned in the exhibit.

In addition to visiting the exhibit, you’re invited to our community events, including:

  • a Japantown Matsuri on Saturday, Nov. 7, in Old Sac
  • a walking tour retracing the old neighborhood
  • an event in honor of civil rights leader Fred Korematsu
  • a Spring Festival to close out the exhibit

If you’re interested in donating….donors of $100 or more will be invited to the opening reception on Thursday, November 5.

Donors of $1,000 or more (by Sept. 12) will be acknowledged at the exhibit, either in their name or in memory of someone. Here’s the link with more information: Sacramento Japantown Museum Project.
