Dharma School at Buddhist Church of Florin isn’t just a Sunday School class, it is a place where youth from preschool to high school can learn and grow, guided by mentors and educated in the ways of the Dharma. We seek to foster a community and a support system for kids to have as they come into their own, and to provide a nurturing environment for them to develop their senses of compassion and empathy.

We welcome every child to join us in Dharma School. Whether your child is shy or outspoken, Dharma School will provide a place for them to discover who they are as a person as they take their next steps in life. No prior background in Buddhism is required; what matters is the journey, and the lessons learned.

Using age-appropriate stories, discussions, songs, crafts, and hands-on activities, students explore Buddhist principles and how they relate to everyday life. Some of the core lessons include:

• Compassion: seeing and responding to the suffering of others
• Self-awareness: noticing our feelings, thoughts, and actions
• Gratitude: appreciating the support we receive every day
• Interdependence: understanding how all life is connected
• The Nembutsu: saying Namo Amida Butsu to express humility and thankfulness
• Responsibility: learning to reflect rather than blame

Through cooperation and interaction with their fellow peers, we also foster a sense of confidence and leadership within students. We seek to give them the tools to succeed in life, not just the confines of the temple. Our goal is not to teach perfection, but to help students live with kindness, courage, and authenticity.

Dharma School meets on Sundays after the 10:00 a.m. Family Service at Buddhist Church of Florin. Classes are offered for preschoolers through high schoolers and are led by experienced, caring volunteer teachers who are passionate about guiding the next generation.

Parents are always invited to join our family services or sit in on classes.
